Socials Made Me Do It: Falling for Filet Crochet
Filet crochet is way more fun and way easier than I ever thought it would be...!
I’ll be honest: filet crochet was not love at first sight.
For years, I happily lived in my little crochet bubble of cozy textures, chunky yarn, and projects I could finish while half-watching a series and negotiating snacks with my kids. Filet crochet? That looked… structured. Grid-like. Very neat. Almost too neat.
But then something happened.
Scrolling through Instagram one evening (as you do, when you should be doing literally anything else), I started noticing these stunning filet crochet pieces popping up everywhere. Light, airy designs with bold shapes. Minimalist but still somehow intricate. And suddenly, I was intrigued.
So naturally, I did what any reasonable person with a crochet habit would do: I went down the filet crochet rabbit hole.

Social Media Made Me Start Filet Crochet
Let’s talk about the real culprit here: social media.
You know the kind of posts I mean — those perfectly styled photos with sunlight hitting a filet crochet wall hanging just right, or a breezy filet crochet top that looks like it belongs on a beach holiday you haven’t booked yet.
At first, I told myself: “That’s beautiful, but probably not for me.”
Then: “Okay… maybe I could try filet crochet.”
Then: “Fine. I’ll just make a small filet crochet swatch.”
And just like that, I was hooked.
There’s something very satisfying about seeing a filet crochet design slowly appear out of a grid. It’s almost like pixel art, but with yarn — and I am absolutely here for it.
If you’re not already following me over on Instagram, this is your gentle nudge. I share a lot of my crochet journey there — including my filet crochet experiments, new designs, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of pattern creation.

What Is Filet Crochet?
If you’re new to filet crochet, here’s the simple version:
Filet crochet is a technique where you create a grid using open and filled squares. These squares form a pattern — anything from geometric shapes to text, florals, or more detailed images.
Most filet crochet patterns are made using:
Chains
Double crochet stitches
That’s it.
Which is exactly why filet crochet is so appealing. The stitches are simple, but the results can look incredibly detailed and refined.
My First Filet Crochet Projects
When I started with filet crochet, I began with small projects to get a feel for the technique.
And very quickly, I understood why so many people love filet crochet.
It’s calming, repetitive in the best way, and incredibly satisfying to watch grow row by row. There’s a rhythm to filet crochet that feels both creative and structured at the same time — which, as it turns out, is a combination I didn’t know I needed.
It also fits surprisingly well into everyday life. A few rows in the evening, a bit of crochet with a cup of coffee, or a quiet moment during the day — filet crochet slips right in.
Designing My Own Filet Crochet Patterns
This is where things got really exciting.
Once I understood how filet crochet patterns are built, I immediately started thinking: “I could design my own filet crochet patterns.”
And of course… I did. You can get my first filet crochet pattern for free here!
As someone who already designs and sells crochet patterns, exploring filet crochet design felt like opening a new creative door. Filet crochet patterns are clean, graphic, and incredibly versatile — which makes them perfect for modern crochet projects.
My Favorite Tools for Filet Crochet Design
I keep my filet crochet design process quite simple, using a mix of digital tools and hands-on methods:
StitchFiddle
This is my go-to tool for designing filet crochet patterns digitally. It makes it easy to create grids, test ideas, and adjust designs before I start crocheting.
Pen and Paper
Yes, I still use pen and paper for filet crochet design. Sometimes it’s the fastest way to sketch out an idea and experiment freely.
Trial and Error
A big part of my filet crochet process is simply trying things out. I crochet samples, adjust the design, and refine until it feels right.
It’s not always perfectly planned — but it’s creative, flexible, and very rewarding.
From Filet Crochet Design to Crochet Patterns
Filet crochet has quickly become part of my pattern design work.
One of the things I love most about filet crochet patterns is how adaptable they are. A single filet crochet design can be used in so many different ways, which makes it both practical and inspiring as a designer.
If you’ve followed my work before, you’ll know I love creating crochet patterns that are not only beautiful but also usable in everyday life — and filet crochet fits perfectly into that approach.
Filet Crochet Ideas: What Can You Make?
If you’re wondering what you can actually make with filet crochet, the answer is: quite a lot.
Here are some of my favorite filet crochet ideas:
Filet Crochet Scarves
Light, airy, and perfect for layering. A filet crochet scarf can be simple or feature repeating patterns for extra detail.
Filet Crochet Wall Hangings
Probably one of the most popular uses of filet crochet. Bold, graphic designs look amazing as wall decor.
Filet Crochet Tops
Perfect for warmer weather. A filet crochet top is breathable, stylish, and just a little bit eye-catching.
Filet Crochet Skirts
Layered over fabric, a filet crochet skirt can create a beautiful and unique look.
Filet Crochet Bags
Using filet crochet panels in bags adds texture and interest without making them too heavy.
Filet Crochet Home Decor
Think cushion covers, table runners, or even curtains if you’re feeling ambitious.
The versatility of filet crochet is one of the reasons I’ve fallen for it — there’s always a new idea waiting to be explored.
Why Filet Crochet Works So Well
Filet crochet has a way of combining simplicity and impact.
The technique itself is straightforward, but the finished pieces can look incredibly detailed and modern. Whether you prefer minimal designs or more intricate patterns, filet crochet gives you the flexibility to create something truly personal.
It’s also a technique that grows with you. You can start with simple grids and gradually move into more complex filet crochet designs as your confidence builds.
A Creative Hobby That Fits Real Life
Between kids, work, and everyday life, I don’t always have endless time for crochet.
That’s why I appreciate how well filet crochet fits into small pockets of time. It’s easy to pick up, work on for a bit, and put down again without losing momentum.
As a 43-year-old mum of two (who also happens to have a serious crochet habit), that flexibility matters.
Crochet has always been my way to unwind, and filet crochet has added a fresh layer of creativity to that.
Why I’m Sticking with Filet Crochet
